The drainage engineering design specialty of
SMEDI was founded in 1954. It is one of the earliest design institutes
being engaged in the drainage design specialty. After the pioneering work
for 40 odd years, it has developed to have the comprehensively drainage
professional design groups with the complete type of the drainage,
building, civil construction, electricity, instrument, communications,
mechanism, financial estimate and budget, technical economy, heating and
ventilation, rock soil, survey and etc. There are about 160 professional
technicians, among them 12 professor senior engineers and 42 senior
engineers.
Over 40
years, SMEDI has completed about 700 drainage engineering planning design
projects, which are 150 sewage treatment plants, 410 drainage pumping
station and about 3200 km drainage pipes. Among them, the largest scope of
the drainage projects in our country are Shanghai Combined Sewage Control
Project, Large-size Sewage Treatment Project, Large-size Flood Drainage
Pumping Station Project, Industrial Wastewater Control project and etc. In
addition, SMEDI undertakes the analysis and monitor of the sewage quality
and flow, and the analysis and measurement of the sludge character.
SMEDI
attaches importance to the development and application of the new
technology and the new technique. At the beginning of 1980s, A/O process
biological denitrification technology was firstly adopted in Shanghai
Xinzhuang Sewage Treatment Plant. And the new technique and the new
industry of SBR process, oxidation ditch process, A2/O process and A/B
process were applied in the projects. In the recent years, it is
developing the application of the high-density settling technique and the
aeration biological filter technique, and the study of the water reuse,
sludge comprehensive utilization and odor removal facilities to make the
sewage treatment technique develop along the high efficient, integrating
and resourceful orientation and continuously to enhance the ecological
level of the city.
The
drainage works designed by SMEDI has won many prizes of excellent design
issued by the State, the Ministry and the Municipality. Since 1980, SMEDI
has won 31 prizes of excellent design and 18 prizes of sicence and
technology advancement issued by the Ministry of Construction and the
Municipality. Among them, Shanghai Combined Sewage Control Stage I Project
has won 1998 silver medal prize of the State.
Entrusted
by the State Planning Commission, SMEDI undertook the compilation and
revision of <<Outdoor Drainage Design Standard>>, and is
responsible for the management and interpretation of the standard. In
addition, SMEDI took part in the compilation of <<Water Supply &
Drainage Design Handbook>>.
SMEDI took
part in the design and negotiation of more than 10 projects utilizing the
foreign investment, involving 15 countries and regions in all. Among them,
the municipal project of Shanghai Combined Sewage Control Stage I Project
is the project firstly utilizing the loan from the World Bank and firstly
carrying out the construction bid and the construction supervision
according to the international practice. SMEDI has accumulated the
experience and set up the good prestige in the foreign technical
negotiation, the compilation of the international competitive bidding
document, the cooperation of the foreign consultant companies and etc.
