Introduction of Water Supply Works

The water supply engineering design specialty of SMEDI was founded in 1954. It is one of the earliest design institutes being engaged in the water supply design specialty. After the pioneering work for 40 odd years, it has developed to have the comprehensively professional design groups with the complete type of the water supply, electricity, instrument, automatic control, building, civil construction, mechanism, heating and ventilation, financial estimate and budget, technical economy, rock soil, survey and etc. There are 160 professional technicians, among them 12 professor senior engineers and 38 senior engineers.

Over 40 years, SMEDI has completed about 600 water supply engineering planning design projects. The total engineering design scope has reached 42,000,000 m3/d, in which including the largest scope of the urban waterworks in our country, the industrial water supply to the large-size enterprise, the seawater intake of nuclear power plant, the purification plant independently invested by the foreign company (BOT project), the large-size urban long-distance water diversion, the large-area water supply, the river-mouth reservoir intake and etc.

SMEDI attaches importance to the development and application of the new technology, new technique and new structure, and converts the achievements in scientific research into the productive forces in time. SMEDI creates the double-valve filter, static mixer, siphon movable hood backwash filter, cast-in-situ steel reinforced concrete pressure conveying channel, building-up water tank and the other structures in our country; positively introduces the foreign advanced technology and technique; is the first to complete the application of the new technology of the V-shape filter and continuously improves and enhances it so as to achieve the good result. SMEDI optimizes the system in the engineering design to save the engineering investment and operation cost.

The water supply works designed by SMEDI has won many prizes of excellent design issued by the State, the Ministry and the Municipality. Since 1980, SMEDI has won 4 prizes of excellent design issued by the State, 9 prizes of excellent design issued by the Ministry of Construction, 16 prizes of excellent design and 2 prizes of science and technology advancement issued by Shanghai Municipality. Among them, Baosteel Changjiang River Diversion Project has won the gold medal prize of the State, Huangpu River Upper Reaches Diversion Stage I Project has won the silver medal prize of the State.

Entrusted by the Ministry of Construction, SMEDI, as the management unit of <<Outdoor Water Supply Design Standard>>, is responsible for the compilation and interpretation of the standard. In addition, SMEDI has completed the compilation of many state standard catalogues and the chief editing work of <<Water Supply & Drainage Design Handbook>>.

SMEDI takes part in the design and negotiation of more than 10 projects utilizing the foreign investment. The projects, besides the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, involve about 10 states and regions of British, France, Japan, Spain, Austria, Australia, North America and Northern Europe. SMEDI has accumulated the experience and set up the good prestige in the foreign technical negotiation, the compilation of the international competitive bidding document, the cooperation of the foreign consultant companies and etc.
