Overall Introduction of SMEDI

Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (SMEDI) was founded in 1954. It is one of the earliest established, the large leading comprehensively municipal engineering design institutes in China. Presently, it possesses about 10 specialties of water supply, sewage, road, bridge, hydraulic structures, architecture, geological engineering survey, orbit traffic and environmental engineering general contract etc. 

Since 45 years after established, SMEDI has completed prospecting design and general project contract of over 5000 municipal engineering projects at home and abroad, in which including over 40 projects loaned by the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the governments of various countries. Over the years, SMEDI has won more than 200 prizes of excellent design and science and technology advancement issued by the State, the Ministry or the Municipality. In 1991, it was awarded qualified certificate of All-round Quality Control on engineering prospecting and design, and National First Grade Certificate on archive management in 1995. SMEDI has been named the Municipal Model Unit by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government for three successive times, which lasts for six years since 1991. SMEDI was elected to be one of the Hundred Powers on Comprehensive Strength in design and prospecting trades of China, which was the first among the municipal industry. The quality system of SMEDI was certified by Shanghai Audit Center of Quality System as in conformity with GB/T19001-ISO9001 in 1998. The Staff Ideological Political Seminars held by the institute was recommended as the outstanding seminars for four successive times by the urban construction design system of the Ministry of Construction.

With the reform and opening policy, SMEDI persists on the strategy of “One Major, Two Ends Extension, and Diversified Management”. It develops domestic and international markets with the great effort, and set up the cooperative companies with Japan and etc. At the same time, for the purpose of the developing business, SMEDI established the branches or offices in Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Nanhai, Shantoou, Kunming, Suzhou, Xiamen, Dalian, Qindao, Nanjing, Chongqing, Fuzhou, Urumqi and etc.
